Problem
Navigating Austria’s military system can be complex – not just for new conscripts, but also for militia members, professional soldiers, and civilians interacting with the Armed Forces. Information is scattered across numerous platforms, many of which are outdated, text-heavy, and not optimized for mobile use. Existing systems often lack offline access, personalized user guidance, or intuitive interfaces. For a generation accustomed to mobile-first digital experiences, this gap between expectation and reality was becoming increasingly stark.
Approach
Developed by soldiers, for soldiers, Appmarsch set out to become a digital companion for Austria’s military personnel – supporting every phase of a soldier’s journey. Instead of simply digitizing outdated processes, the app was conceived from the ground up to provide a streamlined, modular, and offline-capable tool for information access, onboarding, and daily use.
It needed to reflect military formality while remaining approachable and intuitive – serving users as diverse as 18-year-old recruits, active-duty professionals, militia soldiers, and even civilian family members seeking orientation.

Appmarsch is a privately developed mobile application for iOS and Android, currently in active use by over 7,000 users – approximately 13% of Austria’s total military personnel, trending upwards.

Development Process
Appmarsch was conceived, designed, and developed in alignment with ISO 9241-210 – the international standard for human-centred design in interactive systems. This structured approach ensured that user needs, contexts, and tasks remained central throughout every design phase. Additionally, it considers elements from Soldier Centered Design-Frameworks (Savage-Knepshield et al. 2012, Razzak, et. al. 2020). The development team conducted iterative usability tests, feedback loops, and field trials to refine both functionality and interface. Continuous evaluation and real-world testing remain integral to the project, contributing to the consistent quality, relevance, and reliability of the app.

Appmarsch consolidates complexity into clarity. It simplifies access to military knowledge, strengthens digital readiness, and reduces the onboarding burden on individual units. With thousands of active users and growing institutional recognition, it is becoming an indispensable resource – especially in the absence of an official mobile solution.
What’s more, Appmarsch has cultivated an active and engaged user community. Soldiers regularly submit feature requests, report bugs, and provide constructive feedback – strong indicators of real-world utility and trust. This direct communication loop has become a driving force behind the app’s ongoing evolution. Based on this engagement, the team is already working on a fully reimagined next-generation version of Appmarsch.
