The PRRI American Values Atlas (AVA) is an interactive data platform that enables users to explore over a decade of public opinion research across all 50 states. Built for researchers, journalists, and policymakers, the Atlas translates complex survey data into clear, accessible insights through dynamic visualizations and real-time filtering.

The project resolved major performance and usability issues in the previous tool, which lacked fast, reliable access to large datasets. The redesign delivered a scalable, high-performance system that processes complex queries instantly while remaining user-friendly.

We adopted a modern serverless architecture to improve speed, reliability, and cost efficiency. The platform provides sub-second response times even with large datasets and complex demographic filters. A global CDN maintains consistent performance for users in all regions, including during high-traffic news events.

The interface emphasizes clarity and flexibility. Users can explore data using interactive maps, charts, and tables, and filter by geography and demographic variables. Side-by-side comparisons and cross-tabulation tools enable deeper analysis without complicating the user experience.

A key feature is the integrated data export system. Users can download any dataset view as a formatted Excel file instantly, enabling seamless transition from exploration to analysis without manual extraction.

The Atlas is designed for accessibility and adaptability. Its responsive layout supports both desktop and mobile use, and a hybrid content system lets PRRI manage methodological content within their existing CMS.

The result is a fast, reliable, and user-friendly research tool that broadens access to complex public opinion data. The American Values Atlas is now PRRI’s flagship digital product, supporting real-time reporting, academic research, and public understanding of national trends.
